Empty pockets never held anyone back. Only empty heads and empty hearts can do that. ~ Norman Vincent Peale

Self-actualization

Self-actualization is a term that describe or indicate an individual's optimal self-development and growth, which results in an efficient and the productive self-creation, establishing and sustaining of a personal umwelt, which is directed and controlled by an individual's self-determination and achieved by means of accelerated learning. When this isn't the case… then the individual isn't actualizing his/her potential… period!

Unfortunately, plenty of people - most of the time - merely loosely regard self-actualization as some kind of educational program or training course, without any actual meaningThus, being individualized and customized to address and accommodate individual needs and requirements and/or purpose for an individual's self-actualizationA cumulative term combining self-determination, self-empowerment (life skills) and psyche management (coping mechanisms). .

The implication of this collective society perspective regarding individual self-actualization, merely reduce self-actualization to following a predefined curriculum “scientifically” proven to “self-actualize” all individuals that can be classified as “normal” and the rest are either medicated to act “normal”, send for “designer therapies or training” in an attempt to restore “normality” or being categorized as “just able to only…”.

Sadly though, when self-actualization disregards the unity context of the human life cycle and various dimensions of being human, self-actualization essentially becomes something that implies 'all people are the same' and merely accommodate some individual differences in terms of 'some people are the same'. The all important key and essential aspect of authentic self-actualization… 'no two individuals are alike' and self-determination. Both are grossly neglected when educating and/or training individuals, while paying lip service to individual-specific self-actualization.

However, in essence, self-actualization is the exclusive responsibilityBecause self-actualization differs in unique and special ways from one individual to the next, which means that no one can initiate and sustain self-actualization on behalf of another of each and every individual and modern society's educators and trainersFor example: Parents, Teachers, Lecturers, Managers, Supervisors, Facilitators, Life- and Career coaches, …etc. are only accountable in the sense of providing the necessary facilities, guidance and opportunities that an individual could or might employ to determine, establish and follow a self-actualizing life and future career path.

Self-actualization is the sole responsibility of each individual, not his/her parents, the school nor any institution for that matter. The community can only provide possible opportunities and accompanied assistance that an individual might select to use for optimal self-development and -growth based on a personalized and customized accelerated learning strategy.

Therefore in an AltanaESP Network of Services context, self-actualization primarily implies a focus - as required and needed - mainly on the following three aspects…

  1. Gaining self-knowledge, understanding and insight (i.e. self-awareness).
  2. Obtain career knowledge and conduct job demarcations (i.e. habitat-awareness).
  3. Integrate and prioritize self- and career knowledge to identify the steps needed to obtain particular objectives in order to achieve a specific goal (i.e. optimal symbiotic-awareness).

providing that an individual really wants to follow a self-actualizing path in life, a dream career of his/her preference and obtain authentic self-determination that is focused on and geared for the current rising emotions economy.

However, when an individual just strives to earn money in an honest and societal acceptable manner, modern day self-actualizationAn unfortunate and typical view and perspective currently held by the majority of people, which in essence only translates as a way to earn an income to put bread on the table and consume the many materialistic luxuries available. is fairly simple… obtain recent job and salary statistics, determine the best paying job with affordable training and for the rest, just go where the money is.

But when you - as an individual - are genuinely serious to actually confront the many changes and plenty of challenges offered by today's society and the modern workplace successfully - and with the necessary confidence and poise - you should dedicate your time and effort - even money - to at least start dealing with the following provided ToDo-listA ToDo-list compiled to essentially determine… (i) Who & what am I, (ii) My typical harmonious environmental fit and (iii) My niche in life. as early in life as possible.

Self-actualization is key and essential to survive and prosper in a future place of work.

The main reasons for the above warning - in a nutshell - is quite clearly and adequately explained in the following TED-talk delivered by Daniel Susskind.
